Daydreaming

Dishes to wash, laundry to start, mail to sort, and so much more to do...but I'm daydreaming of the things that could be made with these. A pin cushion, a little pouch, so many possibilities.

A small gift for a loved one, since Christmas is coming soon (it's going to embellish a card or notebook). This was so fun to stitch. The pattern, by Véronique Enginger, is from the November / December 2011 issue of Création Point de Croix magazine. Hope you have a nice week! :)

P.S. The little girl fabric is from Un Point C'est Tout.

Making a Few Changes

Thank you to everyone who has visited my shop so far. While I really enjoyed selling books and other craft supplies, I've decided to switch to vintage items, which is another passion of mine (as you probably know from reading my blog).

Here are a few of the things I've just added to the shop, and I plan to add new items often. Thanks so much again!

A Little Pouch

Though sometimes I'm reluctant to cut into favorite vintage textiles, it seems, well, not quite right to leave pretty old fabrics folded up in an armoire where they aren't often seen or touched. With that in mind, I made this little pouch to hold sewing notions. It now sits on my crafting table (where it can be seen and used often :). A bientôt !

Bien que parfois il me soit difficile de découper de beaux tissus anciens, ce serait dommage de les laisser pliés dans une armoire où on ne peut ni les voir ni les toucher. Avec cela en tête, j'ai réalisé cette petite pochette pour y ranger de la mercerie. Elle se trouve maintenant sur la table dans mon coin atelier (où je peux la voir et l'utiliser souvent :). A bientôt !

A Rosy Outcome

One of the things I love about hunting for vintage treasures is that you never know how the day will go or what you'll find. It's an adventure. For example, the other morning started out dark and drizzly, but thanks to these pretty tea cups found along the way, the day ended up smelling like a rose.

Quand on chine, on ne sait jamais sur quoi on va tomber et c'est ça que j'adore. C'est comme partir à l'aventure. Par exemple, ce matin-là a commencé sous un ciel sombre et pluvieux. Mais, grâce à ces jolies tasses qui se sont trouvées sur mon chemin, la journée s'est terminée en rose.

Kitchen Memories

And here's the finished project -- a photo album and recipe book (for pictures of our little chef helping in the kitchen and recipes of his favorite dishes). I hope it will hold many good memories for when he's older! :)

Et voici la réalisation terminée -- un album photo / livre de recette (pour y mettre les photos de notre petit chef en train d'aider à cuisiner et les recettes de ses plats préférés). En espérant que cet album amènera plein de bons souvenirs quand il sera plus grand ! :)

Before Paris Awakes

Persuasion is rarely, if ever, required to get me up and going for a morning walk through the flea market. But I have to admit that rising early and stepping out into a dark, cold winter morning sometimes requires a fair share of self-motivation.

A warm and cloudless July day, though...well, that's a different story. On these summer mornings, I love waking and getting out before Paris gets up and going. It feels like having Paris -- the sights, sidewalks, and streets -- all to myself, if only for a quiet little while.

Of course, finding some old fabric and thread wasn't such a bad way to end this July morning, either (hmm...probably not so coincidentally, they seem to be the same colors as my blog :).

En général, il me faut peu de choses pour me lever tôt le matin et aller faire un tour au marché aux puces. Mais je dois reconnaître que les matins froids d'hiver, lorsqu'il fait encore nuit dehors, peuvent nécessiter parfois une bonne dose de courage.

Une journée de juillet sans un nuage cependant, ça change tout. Durant ces matins d'été, j'adore me lever et sortir avant que Paris se réveille. Cela me donne l'impression d'avoir Paris pour moi toute seule -- les rues et ruelles, les immeubles, les trottoirs -- un court moment paisible, en tout cas.

Bien sûr, ce n'était pas mal non plus de terminer cette matinée de juillet en chinant ces quelques trouvailles (et...ce n'est probablement pas un hasard si elles sont dans les mêmes tons que mon blog :).

A Bear on a Bicycle...

and an hour or so.

Oh, the satisfaction of actually completing a project. :)

Stepping Up and Stepping Back

A steep march up, up, up hundreds of well-worn and winding stone stairs to the top of Notre Dame's towers we recently went. While the getting there literally took our breaths away, the view from above proved breathtakingly beautiful.

Une marche puis une autre puis encore une autre... des centaines de marches ayant bien vécues pour nous mener jusqu'au sommet de la tour gauche de Notre Dame où nous nous sommes rendus récemment. Après avoir perdu notre souffle pendant cette montée laborieuse, c'était cette fois-ci la vue offerte de tout là-haut qui nous a coupée le souffle.

"Bleu et Blanc" Vintage Finds

These are some vintage sewing notions, found recently on the same day but at different places -- "bleu et blanc" boxes of pins, buttons, and bits of lace and trim (I wasn't intentionally choosing blue and white, it just happened that way).

Everything from A to Z

This is a tote that I made for carrying everything from A to Z (library books, for example), everywhere from place A to place Z. The cross-stitched letters are from the lovely new book Ours (Bears), which is in the shop.

Hmm...suite à mon dernier post et celui-ci, vous avez peut-être remarqué que j'adore les lettres, les mots et la lecture. :)

Voici un sac que j'ai réalisé pour y mettre un peu de tout, de A à Z (des livres de la bibliothèque, par exemple), et pour les emmener un peu partout, dans tous les lieux de A à Z. Les lettres sont tirées du nouveau livre Ours, qui se trouve dans la boutique.

F is for Finished

Q is for Quilt

How are you? I hope your week is going well!

This is just a peek at what I'm working on right now...a quilt for my little one, thanks to this free pattern (it's very easy to follow and sews together quickly). After making a few small changes to the measurements and a fabric, the top is finished, so now it's time to quilt it. To be continued...

Après avoir fait quelques petites modifications au niveau des mesures et d'un des tissus, le dessus est fini, alors maintenant il faut le quilter. A suivre...

Food for Thought

On this quiet August afternoon, I'm just thinking about a few of the many little pleasures for which I'm grateful:

:-: Being able to sit at the small table in our kitchen, eat breakfast, drink green tea, and read the newspaper (to catch up on the news, but also to improve my French). For a long time we weren't able to sit in our tiny kitchen, but thanks to some rearranging when we painted this summer, we found space for the table. Now it's like we have an extra room.

:-: The sights, smells, and sounds of France's open air markets, with their olives, cheeses, nuts, roasted chickens, fruits, vegetables, fish, fresh herbs, and flowers -- all artfully arranged. Food is prepared right before your eyes and les marchands generously offer cooking tips or recipes.

:-: The heavenly scent wafting from our Colombian neighbor's kitchen when she makes empanadas. It reaches all the way downstairs and greets us as soon as we enter the building.

:-: The Indian/Pakistani restaurant across the street that nearly burned down last month, on one of the summer's hottest days. For the first two years that we lived here, the hard-working man who runs it opened the restaurant every single day. Fortunately -- and because he works so hard -- it's been repaired and will re-open soon.

:-: The neighborhood in Paris known as the Asian district, where the freshly made Vietnamese spring rolls and bo bun are so delicious (and affordable). As we sit in our favorite restaurant, I like to watch the people go by outside. There's always a lot of activity and there are so many interesting things to observe.

:-: Sharing these things with my thoughtful husband and enthusiastic son.

:-: Last but not least, I'm grateful, too, that you're here visiting my blog.

:-: En cet après-midi calme du mois d'août, je pense à ces quelques petits plaisirs de la vie parmi de nombreux autres pour lesquels je suis reconnaissante:

:-: S'asseoir à la petite table de notre cuisine, y prendre le petit déjeuner avec du thé vert en lisant le journal (pour me tenir au courant de l'actualité mais aussi pour améliorer mon français). Pendant longtemps, nous ne pouvions pas nous asseoir dans notre cuisine minuscule. Mais grâce à un réaménagement pendant nos travaux de peinture cet été, nous avons trouvé la place pour y mettre la table. C'est comme si nous avions maintenant une pièce supplémentaire.

:-: Les couleurs, les odeurs et les sons des marchés découverts français, avec leurs olives, fromages, poulets rôtis, fruits et légumes, poissons, herbes fraîches et fleurs - le tout joliment disposé. Tout est préparé juste sous vos yeux et les marchands vous offrent généreusement des conseils de recettes.

:-: Les délicieuses odeurs venants de la cuisine de notre voisine colombienne quand elle fait des "empanadas". Elles atteignent le rez de chaussé et nous accueillent dès que nous arrivons dans l'immeuble.

:-: Le restaurant indo-pakistanais d'en face qui est presque parti en fumée le mois dernier lors d'une des journées les plus chaudes de l'été. Durant nos deux premières années ici, le restaurant est resté ouvert tous les jours de l'année sans exception. Heureusement, et parce que le gérant a travaillé si dur - le restaurant est remis en état et va rouvrir bientôt.

:-: Le treizième arrondissement à Paris, où les rouleaux de printemps fraîchement préparés et les bo bun sont si délicieux (et abordables). Quand nous nous asseyons dans notre restaurant préféré, j'aime observer les gens qui passent. Il y a toujours beaucoup d'activité et des choses intéressantes à voir.

:-: Partager ces moments avec mon mari attentionné et mon fils plein d'énergie.

:-: Et enfin, je suis également ravie de savoir que vous venez visiter mon blog.

Some Vintage Finds

It's been a little while since I last posted and I'm sorry if you've been visiting, only to be greeted by the same old post. Many things have been keeping me busy and it's been challenging to find the time (and energy) to blog, stitch, and be creative, despite the fact that blogging has been on my mind for the past three weeks.

When life gets busy, it's always nice to go flea marketing, since I think about little else than the present moment. The sights and sounds of a flea market are as soothing to my soul as a sunny beach and sea air. So, in today's post, I thought I'd share a few recent finds with you...vintage sewing notions, fabrics (surprise! :), and bright, cheerful post cards.

Si vous avez visité mon blog dernièrement, vous vous êtes sans doute aperçues que cela fait un moment que je n'ai pas posté. J'espère que vous ne m'en voudrez pas trop ! J'ai été prise par beaucoup de choses et il m'est apparu difficile de trouver du temps (et de l'énergie) pour coudre, broder ou blogguer.

Quand la vie devient trop chargée, c'est sympa de pouvoir me vider l'esprit en allant aux puces. L'ambiance, les sons, les formes et les couleurs m'apaisent autant qu'une plage ensoleillée ou que l'air frais marin. Donc, aujourd'hui, j'ai souhaité vous faire partager quelques trouvailles récentes...de la mercerie ancienne, des tissus (étonnant ! :), et de jolies cartes postales.

Something About Sundays

It's Sunday, and while my husband and his three-year-old helper are putting up shelves in the next room, I'm here in my crafting/blogging corner, surrounded by the new and the old, the colorful...

C'est dimanche et pendant que mon mari et son apprenti de 3 ans montent des étagères dans la pièce à côté, je suis là dans mon coin atelier créatif/blogging, entourée par le récent et l'ancien, le coloré...

...and the not so colorful.

(When I bought this old Eiffel Tower post card at a Paris flea market, the man who sold it to me said, with a twinkle in his eye, that there existed, in fact, a much larger one. And it was nearby, too. Maybe I'd heard of it?)

...et le pas si coloré.

(Quand j'ai acheté, dans un marché aux puces parisien, cette ancienne carte postale avec la Tour Eiffel dessus , l'homme qui me l'a vendue, m'a dit avec un regard malicieux, qu'il en existait en fait une autre, une bien plus grande ! Et qu'elle n'était pas très loin. Peux-être que j'en avais déjà entendue parler ?)

Simplicity.

There's just something about Sundays, something I like and that reminds me that I'm happiest when life is at its simplest.

Il y a un petit quelque chose à propos du dimanche, un petit quelque chose que j'aime bien et qui me rappelle que je suis la plus heureuse au monde quand la vie est peu compliquée.

A Shop Update

Fresh Paint

After spending the day in a busy city like Paris, it's nice to come home to a peaceful, relaxing home. For our family, that means a generous dose of neutral colors (except in our 3-year-old's bright, colorful room). And lots of white paint. :)

Après avoir passé la journée dans une ville pressée comme Paris, c'est agréable de retrouver un chez soi paisible et reposant. Pour notre famille, cela veut dire une bonne dose de tons neutres (sauf dans la chambre bien colorée de notre fils, qui a trois ans). Et beaucoup de choses peintes en blanc. :)

We painted the walls with a natural paint (Natura). And we liked it so much that we decided to paint some of the furniture, too, like this old armoire (most of the things in our home are recycled).

Nous avons peint les murs avec de la peinture Natura, une peinture naturelle. Et elle nous a tellement plu que nous avons décidé de l'utiliser aussi pour peindre les meubles, comme cette armoire ancienne (la plupart des choses chez nous est de la récup).

More white paint, on shelves this time. Since the painting didn't leave much time for crafting, I'm looking forward to putting down the paint brush and picking up a needle and thread.

A nouveau du blanc mais sur des étagères cette fois-ci. La peinture ne m'ayant pas laissé beaucoup de temps pour faire autre chose, je suis impatiente de remplacer le pinceau par du fil et une aiguille.

Since my last post, we've been painting and fixing up our home, but we also managed to get away for a family vacation in the beautiful part of France known as Brittany (to spend some time away together before our little one starts school in September). These are a few photos from our trip.

Vous allez bien ? Depuis mon dernier post, nous avons beaucoup bricolé chez nous, mais nous sommes aussi partis en vacances en Bretagne (pour passer du temps en famille avant que notre petit garçon commence l'école en septembre). Voici quelques photos de notre séjour.

If you're a regular reader of this blog, you know that I'm drawn to objects from the past. That's the case with these recent red, white, and vintage finds. And they have something else in common that I find particularly heartwarming -- their hand-stitched touches. These petits détails make them even more irresistible. :) A très bientôt !

Si vous lisez régulièrement ce blog, vous savez que j'aime les objets du passé. Et c'est le cas pour ces trouvailles récentes rouges, blanches et vintage. En plus, elles ont quelque chose d'autre en commun que je trouve particulièrement touchant -- c'est leurs petits détails qui ont été fait main. Time for Cherries

Mmm, fresh cherries. They'll soon be showing up at the outdoor markets here, so I stitched this just for the fun of it. I'm not sure yet what will become of it...it may end up framed or it could be made into the cover for a recipe book.

The cross-stitch pattern is from the May/June 2010 issue of the new magazine Création point de croix (I added the vintage ribbons and buttons). Wishing you a nice month of May...

Mmm, les cerises. Elles apparaîtront bientôt sur les marchés ici, alors j'ai brodé cette fillette juste pour le plaisir. Je ne sais pas encore quoi en faire...peut-être qu'elle finira dans un cadre ou elle pourrait aussi devenir la couverture pour un livre de recettes.

Linen and Dots

Has your week started well? I hope so... Here's a little pouch that I made thanks to the book Galons, broderies & fantaisie (which is unfortunately out of print now). The dots with the letters are cross-stitched on top.

If I make so many bags and pouches, I guess it's partly because they're so handy for holding all of the little things that I seem to collect (a hard habit to break). A bientôt !

Votre semaine, a-t-elle bien commencé ? J'espère que oui... Voici une petite pochette que j'ai réalisée grâce au livre Galons, broderies & fantaisie (qui n'est malheureusement plus disponible).

Si je fais autant de sacs et de pochettes, je suppose que c'est en partie parce qu'ils sont tellement pratiques pour ranger toutes les petites choses que je collectionne (une habitude difficile à perdre). A bientôt !

A Few Days Away

If you've stopped by lately, you might have wondered where I've been. If so, I'm sorry to have left you wondering. I was away, from the computer and from home, for a few days on a last-minute trip with my husband and son to the Loire Valley.

While there, we visited Chenonceau castle, which stretches across the Cher river. Uniquely shaped by a number of women throughout its 500-year existence, it mingles history, nature (such beautiful gardens), art, music, and architecture (technology, too, since iPod audio/video tours are available to visitors now).

Si vous êtes venus faire un tour récemment sur mon blog, vous avez peut-être remarqué que je n’avais pas posté depuis quelques temps. Si c’est le cas, veuillez m’excuser de vous avoir laissé dans le flou. Je me suis éloignée de l'ordinateur et de la maison pendant quelques jours pour une excursion improvisée dans la vallée de la Loire avec mon mari et mon fils.

A cette occasion, nous avons visité le château de Chenonceau, qui traverse le Cher. Modelé par de nombreuses femmes au cours de ses cinq siècles d’existence, il rassemble histoire, nature (de si beaux jardins), art, musique et architecture (technologie, aussi, depuis que des visites guidées audio/vidéo sont disponibles par iPod).

Standing in a room from which France was governed hundreds of years ago made me daydream. I also learned, among other things, that during World War I the castle was used as a hospital to care for the wounded and during World War II it provided safe passage for people from occupied France on one side of the river to French free territory on the other side.

Être dans une pièce depuis laquelle la France était gouvernée il y a des centaines d’années m’a laissé rêveuse. J’ai aussi appris, entre autres choses, que le château avait eu des utilisations très variés au cours du XXème siècle : pendant la première guerre mondiale, il a servi d’hôpital pour soigner les blessés et pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, il était un lieu de passage de la France occupée à la France libre, le Cher formant la ligne de démarcation.

One of my favorite spots -- the kitchens. Elegantly arranged bouquets composed of fresh flowers and plants grown on the castle grounds greet visitors throughout the castle.

Parmi mes pièces préférées – les cuisines. Des bouquets élégamment arrangés composés de fleurs fraîchement coupés des jardins du château accueillent les visiteurs à travers le chateau.

Like all of the rooms, the kitchens are inviting and communicate what living in the castle must have been like.

Comme toutes les pièces, les cuisines sont accueillantes et transmettent aux visiteurs ce que c’était de vivre au château à l’époque.

In a nearby village, a passageway beckons.

Dans un village avoisinant, un petit passage donne envie de s'y aventurier.

And dreams of castles and the countryside still fill my thoughts...

Des champs colorent la vallée de la Loire en jaune.
Et des rêves de châteaux et de beaux paysages occupent toujours mes pensées...

Noir et blanc

"Black and white" rhymes with "vintage" in my mind. Some of my favorite things are old black and white photos, classic black and white films, even black and white sewing or embroidery treasures from the past.

So while out and about this week, I couldn't resist these vintage finds: rickrack from Les Galéries Lafayette department store, mattress ticking, a spool of thread, and a festonneur (these were rolled in ink and then used to festoon textiles, adorning them with garlands or other motifs that were then embroidered). And -- wouldn't you know it -- now I'm trying to think of something black and white to make. :)

"Noir et blanc" rime avec "vintage" dans mon esprit. J'adore les vieilles photos noires et blanches, les films classiques en noir et blanc, et même la mercerie ou les tissues noirs et blancs du passé.

Alors lorsque je suis allée chiner cette semaine, je n'ai pas pu résister à ces trouvailles : du croquet des Galéries Lafayette, de la toile à matelas, une bobine de fil et un festonneur. Et du coup -- c'était prévisible -- maintenant j'essaie de réfléchir à quelque chose que je pourrais réaliser en noir et blanc. :)

Filled with Flax Seeds

You might have noticed that I like making pincushions. But sometimes I'm not crazy about filling them. Recently, I had the chance to buy some linen directly from the flax growers themselves. In talking to them, not only did I gain an even greater appreciation for linen, but I learned something, too.

Linen is made from the stalks of the flax plant, which of course also produces nutritious flax seeds. While I was aware of this, I didn't know (did you?) that the seeds can be used to fill a pincushion in order to prevent pins and needles from rusting. Add to that the fact that flax seeds are natural, inexpensive, and easy to use, and I think I'll soon be making many more of these.

Vous avez peut-être remarqué que j'aime bien faire des pique-épingles. Mais je n'aime pas toujours les remplir. Récemment j'ai eu la chance d'acheter du lin directement des producteurs. En discutant avec eux, j'ai appris non seulement à mieux apprécier le lin, mais également que l'on pouvait utiliser les graines de lin autrement.

Le lin est fabriqué à partir des fibres de la plante, celle-ci donnant aussi les fameuses graines, excellentes pour la santé. Tout en sachant cela, j'ignorais (et vous ?) que les graines pouvaient être aussi utilisées pour remplir un pique-épingles et que cela évitait aux épingles et aux aiguilles de rouiller. A cela, on peut ajouter que les graines de lin sont à la fois naturelles, bon marché et faciles à utiliser. Alors c'est sûr, je ferai bientôt plein d'autres pique-épingles.

Inspiration in a Jar

Once in a while, it's fun to take some favorite little inspiring things out of drawers and find ways like this to keep them in view (one can never have too much inspiration, right?). And in doing so, it's satisfying to see a jar, for instance, become something more than just-a-jar. :)

De temps en temps, il est sympa de pouvoir sortir de ses tiroirs des petits objets qui nous donnent de l'inspiration et d'essayer de les mettre en valeur là où on peut les voir plus facilement (on n'a jamais trop de sources d'inspiration, n'est-ce pas ?). Et en faisant de la sorte, c'est agréable de voir qu'un bocal, par exemple, peut devenir un peu plus qu'un simple bocal. :)

Learning the ABCs

There's just something I love about making things for children. It's such fun and so rewarding to see their faces when they receive a handmade gift. And right from the beginning, when my son was born in 2007, he inspired me to create things.

This cross-stitch was one of the first things I made for him. The pattern is from French magazine De Fil en Aiguille (N° 58, November-December 2007).* I just changed the colors a bit and then, when finished, mounted it on an artist's canvas from an art supply store. It's been in his room ever since.

But now that he's learning the alphabet, it's become a teaching tool, too. We take it out, say the letters together, and he traces them as we go. And when we reach the letter "z", he says, "Encore, Maman. Encore !"

* I was so sad to see the magazine stop publishing last year, but so glad to hear that two of the creative women behind it have just launched a new magazine called Création Point de Croix and are working on its Web site.

J'adore réaliser des choses pour les enfants et voir leurs visages s'éclairer lorsqu'ils reçoivent un cadeau fait main. Alors, dès sa naissance en 2007, mon fils a été une grande source d'inspiration pour réaliser de nouveaux projets.

Cet abécédaire est l'un de mes premiers projets fait à son attention. There are many things that I appreciate about France. Among them are craft supplies and vintage objects that I find beautiful, and which I've sometimes shown here on my blog.

For your own projects, some of you have wondered where to find materials, which is not always easy outside of France. So for those of you who might be interested, I've opened a little shop online. Thank you so much for your comments and feedback so far!

Here (finally!) are the "after" photos. Now that it's no longer a work in progress, it's a little bag to hold crafting odds and ends -- all of the little things that never seem to be put away otherwise, and for which I'm constantly searching.

Hmm...it seems like I'm just discovering it for the first time because when I gathered all of the pieces together (and when I wrote the last post), I wasn't sure yet what to make. The bag just sort of made itself. :)

Voici (enfin !) les photos "après". Maintenant que le projet est fini, c'est un petit sac pour contenir des fournitures de mon atelier. Toutes ces petites choses qui autrement sont éparpillées un peu partout et pour lesquelles je n'arrive jamais à mettre la main dessus.

Hmm... on dirait que je viens de le découvrir pour la première fois car quand j'ai choisi les tissus (et quand j'ai fait mon dernier post), je ne savais pas vraiment quoi faire. Le sac s'est en quelque sorte composé de lui-même. :)

My Little Island

This is one of those days when my French is jumbled and even my English sounds like it's a second language rather than the one I've been speaking for most of my life. In fact, it's one of those days when just stringing together two sentences presents a bit of a challenge. :)

And this reminds me of a quote from the New York Times Book Review that I read recently, about "the phenomenon of belonging to two different worlds, and thus belonging to neither." How often true that is of my life, I thought.

Thankfully, creativity is like my own small island somewhere between France and the U.S. It's a place where I'm neither American nor French. I'm just me.

And here are some of the things that inspire me to get creative. These are glimpses of my creative space, which is nothing more than a corner in one room. But even though it's small, it's one of my favorite places in the world. :)

Il y a des jours comme celui-ci où mon français est si confus et mon anglais ne semble être qu'une seconde langue au lieu d'être celle que j'ai parlée quasiment toute ma vie. Alors, le seul fait d'essayer d'aligner deux phrases devient un exercice difficile. :)

Cela me rappelle une citation du "New York Times Book Review" que j'ai récemment lu à propos du "phénomène d'appartenir à deux mondes différents, et donc de n'appartenir à aucun des deux". C'est un sentiment que je connais si bien.

Heureusement, la créativité est comme ma propre petite île au milieu de la France et des Etats-Unis. C'est un lieu où je ne suis ni américaine ni française. Je suis simplement moi-même.

Et voici, par exemple, des objets qui m'inspirent. C'est un aperçu de cet endroit, pas plus grand que le petit coin d'une pièce, qui me permet de laisser libre cours à mon imagination. Mais même s'il est petit, c'est un de mes lieux préférés au monde. :)

That's the sound that an ambulance makes in France. And this is a little linen pouch to hold bandages and other first-aid essentials for boo-boos. Hopefully there won't be a need for it anytime soon, but just in case...

A Quilted Patchwork Scarf

It's been so wintery, cold, and snowy in Paris lately that I thought it would be a good time to make a scarf for my son (and the more color, the better). Here is the result (made without a pattern and with much improvisation). I wasn't sure it would keep him warm, but it passed the test (yay!).

P.S. The new year seemed like a good time for a new look here at petits détails, so you might notice a few changes. Hopefully this version is an improvement over the previous one!

Depuis quelques temps, Paris est soit enneigé, soit glacial, alors j'ai pensé que c'était le bon moment pour improviser une écharpe avec des couleurs gaies pour mon fils. Et voici le résultat. Je n'étais pas sûre qu'elle tienne chaud, mais elle a rempli sa mission (youpi !).

P.S. La nouvelle année m'a paru être une bonne occasion pour donner un nouveau look à mon blog. Vous aurez donc peut-être noté quelques changements qui, je l'espère, le rend plus agréable !

The Magic of Books

Reading a good book...is a bit like being carried up into the sky and floating away on an adventure to unknown places. Hopefully the little boy for whom I made this bookmark will have a special spot in his heart for books. And here's wishing him many adventures along the way.

Bouquiner... c'est un peu comme de s'envoler et de partir à l'aventure vers des lieux inconnus. J'espère que le petit garçon pour qui j'ai fait ce marque-page gardera toujours dans son coeur une place pour les livres. Et je lui souhaite plein de voyages merveilleux dans ses lectures.

One Thing to Do in 2010

Fabric can evoke a multitude of thoughts and emotions in me. When I noticed this vintage one in my petit coin atelier today, it slowed me in my tracks and reminded me to:

No matter how many things may land on my To Do list or how many petits détails might fill my mind. And that's a pretty nice way to start the new year.

Les tissus peuvent évoquer beaucoup de pensées et d'émotions en moi. Aujourd'hui, quand j'ai vu ce tissu ancien dans mon petit coin atelier, cela m'a rappelé :

:-: de m'arrêter pour humer le parfum des roses,
de prendre le temps de vivre. :-:

Peu importe les 2 010 choses qui se trouvent sur ma To Do list ou les milliers de petits détails qui m'occupent l'esprit. Et c'est une façon bien agréable de commencer l'année.

Letters to write, gifts to make, books to read, places to see, dreams to dream...so many things have landed on my To Do list for the year ahead.

With that in mind, I thought I'd better make wise use of my time starting now. So I made this three-pocket organizer* and now I just need to get going!

* Based on a JCasa Handmade pattern.

A Bowl Full of Bobbins

While on a recent antiquing outing, I stumbled upon these old bobbins (there are those brown tones again) and this vintage bowl. But I was late getting home (it's so easy to lose track of time when you're doing something you love), and since there was grocery shopping to do, I put them on the table in my crafting corner and rushed back out the door.

It was meant to be a temporary thing until I could find just the right spot for them. The bowl, for its part, was originally destined for the kitchen. But it turned out to be such a good bobbin holder just as it was, it's still right where I left it that day. And guess what, I'm pretty sure that's where it's going to stay! :)

En chinant récemment, je suis tombée sur ces bobines anciennes (voilà encore ces tons marrons) et ce bol vintage. Mais je suis rentrée chez moi en retard (c'est si facile de perdre la notion du temps quand on fait quelque chose qui nous passionne), et comme il y avait des courses à faire, j'ai déposé le bol et les bobines vite fait sur la table de mon petit coin atelier et suis resortie précipitamment de la maison.

Ils n'étaient censés rester là que provisoirement, le temps que je leur trouvent une place définitive. Le bol, pour sa part, devait aller dans la cuisine. Mais il s'est avéré être si pratique pour y mettre les bobines qu'il est toujours là où je l'avais laissé l'autre jour. Et devinez quoi, c'est sans doute là qu'il restera ! :)

Shades of Brown

When I was little, my favorite color was undeniably pink. My bedroom was pink (even the carpet), my bicycle was pink, my clothes were pink, my doll's cothes were pink, and I dreamed of living in a pink house and driving a pink car.

And in some ways I'm still pretty partial to pink. Lately, though, I've learned to appreciate brown in its many forms. Rich tones of sepia, linen, chocolate, beige, burnt umber, and toffee...these are some of the colors I seem to be surrounding myself with now. So you just might see various shades of brown appearing around here (along with some pink from time to time, too). :)

Lorsque j'étais petite, ma couleur préférée était indéniablement le rose. Ma chambre était rose (même la moquette), mon vélo était rose, mes habilles étaient roses, les habilles de ma poupée étaient roses, et je rêvais de vivre dans une maison rose et de conduire une voiture rose.

Le rose fait toujours partie de ma palette de couleurs favorites. Mais récemment, j'ai appris à apprécier le marron dans toutes ses formes. Des nuances riches de sépia, lin, chocolat, beige, sienne et café au lait...ceux sont les couleurs parmi lesquelles je semble m'entourer maintenant. Alors, vous risquez peut-être d'en voir davantage par ici (avec aussi du rose de temps à autre). :)

A Linen Pen and Pencil Case

Despite what the photo looks like, the pens or pencils do actually go -inside- the case. :) It was inspired by a photo in the new embroidery book Points associés et autres points complices du point de croix, by Monique Lyonnet.

The tape with initials is vintage and the border around it is cross-stitched. As for the linen, it's simply banding that's been folded and stitched.

Argh...it seems like I'm often writing these posts late in the evening when I'm frazzled and I end up writing something short and uninspired (like tonight). Sorry for the utter lack of posting pizzazz!

Here's a Bonne Maman jam jar that I put to new use thanks to a kit bought from Bois Joli (just added a few personal touches to it, like the initial on top). It was fast and easy to do, and it's so useful, too. It's nice to be able to see the ribbons and trims inside and yet they're protected from dust (which, much to my chagrin, we seem to have a lot of around here).

Voici un pot Bonne Maman que j'ai transformé grâce à un kit de Bois Joli (j'ai juste rajouté quelques touches personnelles, comme l'initiale sur le dessus). C'était rapide et facile à faire, et en plus c'est pratique. Les rubans et les galons restent visibles mais en même temps ils sont protégés de la poussière (qui, à mon grand regret, est en quantité non négligeable par ici).

Hand-Knit Hats & A 12-Square Quilt

As a prematurely born baby in the hospital, at all times of the day and night our son wore tiny hand-knit hats made by volunteers. The hats were so important because they helped him to stay warm, which allowed him to grow (every gram counted).

We never knew (but often wondered) who knit the hats. I've since wanted to express my thanks and wasn't sure how to do it. I don't know how to knit, so I had the idea to make this quilt and to send it to a non-profit organization for children. That way, a well-deserving child can use it and hopefully stay warm, as our son did thanks to the hats.

Notre fils, né prématurément, portait à l'hôpital des bonnets tricotés par des bénévoles. Ils étaient très importants car ils lui ont permis de rester au chaud et donc de prendre du poids (chaque gramme comptant).

On n'a jamais su (mais on s'est souvent demandé) qui avait tricoté ces bonnets. Alors depuis ce moment, j'ai voulu exprimer ma gratitude. Ne sachant pas tricoter, j'ai eu l'idée de faire ce quilt et de l'envoyer à une association caritative dédiée aux enfants. Ainsi un enfant pourra l'utiliser et je l'espère, rester au chaud comme notre fils avec les bonnets.

This organizer is for holding ongoing cross-stitch projects in one easily accessible and transportable place. It's made with vintage fabrics, ribbon, tape, and is cross-stitched on linen.

The cross-stitch pattern is from the lovely French magazine De fil en aiguille* (n° 71, September-October 2009), which recently announced that it was going out of business due to financial difficulties. More information (in French), including a letter from the editor, can be found here.

I was very sad to hear this news about such a pretty and inspiring magazine that has always succeeded in offering appealing cross-stitch patterns, beautiful photos, helpful instructions, and interesting articles. My thoughts go out to the magazine's staff and contributors, who've done such a great job.

Cette trousse, faite de tissus et galons anciens, va servir à ranger mes points de croix en cours de réalisation. Ingredients for Happiness

It All Began With a Button

I had this cute little red car button but lacked a project for it. Hmm...an idea slowly took shape (why not another one of these?). Then the fabrics came together. And what began as a button ended up as this quilted notepad cover for my son's doodles and drawings.

Tout a commencé avec ce petit bouton. Je le trouvais mignon mais je ne savais pas quoi en faire. Alors...une idée a pris forme petit à petit (pourquoi ne pas refaire un projet comme celui-ci ?). Ensuite, les tissus à choisir se sont présentés d'eux-même selon ce thème. Et ce qui a commencé par un bouton a fini par ce porte-bloc quilté pour les dessins de mon fils.

One More Quilt Block

A couple of posts ago I included a photo of a block for a new quilt in process. For this quilt, my goal is to use at least one vintage fabric in each block.

Here's the second completed block. Can you tell which fabrics are vintage?

When life gets so busy and pulls me away from my favorite antiquing haunts, before long I start to feel like something's missing. That was the case over the past few weeks, so it was good-for-the-soul fun to go flea marketing the other day. Oh, this fabric. What is it about vintage mattress ticking that makes it so compelling?

Whereas I used to think like this, for example:

A Cowgirl in Paris

I grew up in a small town located in a big state, one made up of other mostly small towns surrounded by wide open spaces. In fact, of all fifty U.S. states, it's the tenth largest in size but the least populated.

It's a place where the outdoors are right outside your door, the sky goes on forever, the winter chill goes straight to your bones, and summer brings rodeos and county fairs. Cowboy hats, boots, and jeans are common. In some parts, wild horses roam alongside deer, antelope, elk, coyotes, and eagles. There are mountain ranges, desert, high plains, and places with names like Cheyenne, Yellowstone, Wind River, and Rock Springs.

I'm not quite sure how I ended up in Paris, but a friend visiting here from the small town where I grew up rightly observed that Paris is so beautiful because it was made by human hands, while Wyoming is so beautiful because it was made by nature's hands.

In some ways, there couldn't be two more opposite places. In many ways, I feel fortunate to have known both.

J'ai grandi dans un village situé dans un grand état, composé lui-même essentiellement d'autres villages entourés de grands espaces. En fait, parmi les cinquante états aux US, c'est le dixième le plus grand et en même temps le moins peuplé.

C'est une région où la nature est au pas de la porte, le ciel s'étend à l'infini, les grands froids d'hiver ne laissent pas indifférent, et l'été amène les rodéos et les "county fairs". Les chapeaux et les bottes de cowboy, ainsi que les jeans, sont courants. A certains endroits, les chevaux sauvages errent aux côtés des biches, antilopes, élans, coyotes et aigles. Il y a des chaînes de montagne, le désert, de hauts plateaux et des lieux portant des noms comme Cheyenne, Yellowstone, Wind River et Rock Springs.

Je ne sais pas exactement comment j'ai atterri à Paris, mais un ami venant de là où j'ai grandi et qui nous rendait visite ici a fait l'observation à juste titre que Paris est si beau parce qu'il a été façonné par l'homme, tandis que le Wyoming est si beau parce qu'il a été crée par la nature.

Par certains côtés, deux endroits plus opposés ne pourraient exister. Et pour plein de raisons, j'ai eu tellement de chance de connaître les deux.

The Quilt Top is Finished!

One of my goals for 2009 is to make my first quilt, so I've been working on this one (originally mentioned here). I call it "The Silly Squares Quilt". And finally, the top is finished! It's by far the biggest sewing project that I've ever worked on, so it's nice to be able to say that.

Un de mes objectifs pour 2009 est de faire mon premier quilt, donc depuis un petit moment je travail sur celui-ci. Je l'appelle le "Silly Squares Quilt". Et enfin, le dessus est fini ! C'est de loin mon plus gros projet de couture réalisé jusqu'à présent, alors j'en suis assez fière.

A Patched-Together Pincushion

Over the years I've managed to collect oh, let's just say "quite a few" scraps of fabric. Since I can't bring myself to part with them (and you never know when they might come in handy...right?), once in a while I dig through them and try to prove to myself (and to my husband, understanding though he is) that I can actually put them to use.

That was the case with this little lavender-filled pincushion made of vintage fabric and linen. And I hope there will be many more projects like this to come!

Au fil des ans j'ai accumulé pas mal de bouts de tissu. Comme je n'arrive pas à m'en séparer facilement (et on ne sait jamais quand on en aura besoin...n'est-ce pas ?), de temps à autre je fouille dedans pour essayer de me convaincre (ainsi que mon mari, même s'il est compréhensif) que je peux en faire quelque chose.

Tel était le cas avec ce pique-épingle fait à partir de tissus anciens et rempli de lavande. J'espère qu'il y aura plein d'autres projets comme celui-ci à venir !

A Quilted Log Cabin Pillow

This is a quilted log cabin pillow that I made for my little one using an improvised combination of vintage and new fabrics. It's not perfect and has some uneven seams, but that's actually what I like about it -- it's just a whimsical, take-me-as-I-am kind of pillow. More importantly, my son likes it, so I guess it's a keeper. Have a nice week!

Vintage Inspiration

Old bobbins of thread in pretty shades of blue, green, and yellow (oh, a package of needles, too)...these were in a metal cookie tin that I feel fortunate to have found the other day. Despite their age, the colors are just as bright and cheerful as I imagine they were when new.

They've inspired me to make something in similar colors -- what, I don't know -- but I do know that I just love these colors together. Hope you have a warm sunny weekend!

Des vielles bobines de fils dans de jolis tons de bleu, vert et jaune (sans oublier les aiguilles)...voici ce qu'il y avait dans une boîte en métal à biscuits que j'ai eu la chance de chiner l'autre jour. Malgré leur age, les couleurs sont aussi vives et gaies que ce qu'elles devaient être neuves.

Ces bobines m'inspirent pour réaliser quelque chose dans ces tons -- je ne sais pas encore quoi exactement -- mais ce dont je suis sûre, c'est que je les trouve ravissantes ensemble. Je vous souhaite un week-end chaud et ensoleillé !

...but in a different style. After sewing for a bit, I start to miss cross-stitching and vice versa, so it's nice to combine the two in a single project like this. I used the same coloring wallet tutorial, but adapted it a little. This one is for favorite photos, mementos, souvenirs, baseball cards, scraps of paper, postage stamps, or other things that a child might like to collect.

The cross-stitch pattern, by Perrette Samouïloff, is from the book "Broderie & cartonnage pour enfants sages" (I just changed some of the colors so that I could use the thread that I already had). Doesn't that little boy look like he jumped out of bed in the morning, threw on his clothes, and flew out the door without brushing his hair?

It's probably pretty obvious by now that I'm a fan of Jennifer Casa's designs, and here's yet another one -- a coloring wallet with pockets for crayons, a note pad, and drawings. I think I say this all the time, but it truly was so fun to make!

Some Very Colorful Colors

My two-year-old son really likes these bright colors, so thanks to him I had fun making this wall tote based on a tutorial by Jennifer Casa of JCasa Handmade (I love the fact that it has a big pocket on the front). Aren't kids the best?

An "Appetizing" Recipe

Mix it all together and here's a glimpse of what you get!
No cooking required :)

A "New" Old Pillow

My grandpa lived and, like many people, struggled through the Great Depression in the US. He never forgot what it was like and he believed in avoiding waste whenever possible. I'd like to think he'd approve of this project -- everything used was 100% recycled.

My husband helped me remove the feather down filling and then restuff the pillow once it had been washed. Despite our best efforts, it was snowing feathers everywhere (aaackck!), but we managed to have a good laugh about it. Three vaccuuming attempts later, I think we've finally managed to get it all!

A Flea Market Mystery

A few years ago I bought the book Petits Cadeaux Brodés (Little Embroidered Gifts). The embroidery projects in it are beautiful and the photos all have a vintage theme. Ever since the first time I thumbed through it, one of my favorite vintage objects in it has been the tiny doll in the picture above. I'm not sure why, because even though I find them adorable, I've never been especially drawn to vintage dolls.

Well, my sewing and embroidery "to do" list has gotten pretty long and I hadn't looked at this book in a long time (maybe a year?). Then the other night, in search of some embroidery inspiration, I pulled it out. And, as usual, I ended up at this page, smiling at this cute little doll. And that was that. It was time for dinner and the book went quickly back on the shelf.

But guess what I found at the flea market the very next day? The exact same doll. I'd never seen one like her before and I don't know if I'll ever see another one again. Actually, I didn't find her - it's more like she found me. And the strange thing is, this same thing happens every once in awhile. Pretty mysterious, don't you think?
Here she is, all 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) of her, with the new dress I made for her.

P.S. The little boy quilt is coming along - all 35 blocks are finished and sewn in rows. I just have to sew the rows together and hopefully will post about it again pretty soon.

First Snowflake

Almost finished with this one*. It's for a certain little boy who saw his first snowflake this year, so I just have to stitch his name at the top, along with "first snowflake" and "2009". It's on linen and I'll probably have it framed.

The snow is long gone now, though, and springtime sunshine is streaming in through the windows here (yay!). Hope you have a very happy Easter -- joyeuses Pâques ! -- if you'll be celebrating it this weekend!

Making Progress on the Quilt

It's gray and rainy today, but actually I don't mind -- it's a good reason to stay inside and work on the quilt. The front is coming together and I'm planning on using these fabrics on the back of it. It's fun to put together lots of little boy-ish prints.

This is going to be a really colorful quilt, but for some reason I keep taking photos of the blues and greens. There will be oranges and yellows, too.

And here's another finished block. I should mention again that the idea for this quilt comes from Alissa of Handmade by Alissa. If you're interested in quilting with a fresh modern look, her blog is definitely worth a visit. Also, she takes commissions, so you can purchase one of her quilts (quilted pillows, too) if you like.

Quilt in Progress

Daylight saving time began yesterday in France, which means lots of light for crafting in the evenings. I think I'll need it -- I've been bitten by the quilting bug.

Here's the beginning of a quilt that I'm making based on the inspiring pattern here. The one that I'm making will have 35 blocks like these (with a mixture of vintage and new fabrics), and I can't wait to see it come together!

To all of you who leave comments in a language -- whether French or English -- other than your mother tongue, thank you very much because I know from experience that it's not always easy to do so.

Since some of you have asked where I find vintage fabrics...the answer is the usual places -- thrift stores, flea markets, etc. But I should say that I'm not lucky enough to find them very often. I love vintage fabrics and have just collected them for many years. For example, I've been sort of hoarding these two giveaway ones for quite awhile (a good reason for me to part with them - they should be put to use somehow rather than just sitting hidden in a basket).

Why give these away? Well, it's nice to be able to share an interest in vintage fabrics with other people who like them, too. Also, it's a way to show my appreciation for the visits and kind comments that I've received on my blog. Being a mother to a little boy keeps me really busy and I'm not able to visit/leave comments on other blogs or respond individually as much as I'd like to.

A Recent Vintage Find

I couldn't resist this 1920s/30s fabric when I saw it for sale. It's tattered and faded...but, oh, the charm of it.

Things I especially like about it:

The Quilt Binding

Here's the binding that will go around the edge of the quilt. It's cut on the bias, which I'd never done before, but it was actually easier to do than I'd imagined (there's a helpful video here). Now I just have to figure out how to piece together the back of the quilt (the plan is to use fabric that I already have) before basting the layers together with safety pins.

Ever since I started this quilt, in the back of my mind I've been wondering where in our little home there would be space for this. Well, it's looking like it might require moving some furniture out of the way so that I can stretch it out on the floor (fortunately, my husband is a very understanding man).

The Finished Quilt Top

The quilt top is finished, with all 20 blocks and the white sashing sewn together. I've decided to name this quilt "Past and Present" because it's made of both vintage and new fabrics.

This is the largest sewing project I've worked on (it measures 65" x 80" or 1,65m x 2,03m), so it's been satisfying to watch it come together. I think the next steps -- quilting and binding -- will be challenging (maybe I should have made a baby quilt first as practice :), but I hope to learn a lot in the process.

This bag was inspired by the floral fabric that I used for the heart and drawstring casing. I have just a few small pieces of it and tried to think of a way to use them, since I liked the fabric so much. Here's what became of them.
