Learning the ABCs

There's just something I love about making things for children. It's such fun and so rewarding to see their faces when they receive a handmade gift. And right from the beginning, when my son was born in 2007, he inspired me to create things.

This cross-stitch was one of the first things I made for him. The pattern is from French magazine De Fil en Aiguille (N° 58, November-December 2007).* I just changed the colors a bit and then, when finished, mounted it on an artist's canvas from an art supply store. It's been in his room ever since.

But now that he's learning the alphabet, it's become a teaching tool, too. We take it out, say the letters together, and he traces them as we go. And when we reach the letter "z", he says, "Encore, Maman. Encore !"

* I was so sad to see the magazine stop publishing last year, but so glad to hear that two of the creative women behind it have just launched a new magazine called Création Point de Croix and are working on its Web site.

  13. I am a Chinese lady living in Vancouver, Canada. I am a big fan of De Fil En Aiguille and was looking for the last few ones by googling it last night. Unfortunately I could find no where to buy them ,but fortuantely I found your blog and really loved every project that you made and all the beautiful pictures that you shared with us. And , I am so happy to know that the ladies from that DFEA magazine published the new ones from you . Do you know their website as I could not find its website from google. I really want to buy their magazines again , they are just so wonderful.

My two daughters go to the French school here , so both of them can speak fluent French which they said sounds different from people in French. We went to Quebec for a short vacation during summer and they loved the atmosphere there. We plan to visit Paris in the near future, because I love all the vintage sewing stuff there, hope I will be lucky to find any at that time.

    Take care.

  14. Oh my. Your blog is so beautiful. It has been a long time since I have seen so many beautiful stitched things on one blog. I used to live in Germany, and I loved to visit all of the small embroidery shops. They always had such a lovely way of merchandising their wares. The stitching was of course so delicate, that you did not want to touch it.
I had to blog about your site tonight. I just love it, and I hope you get alot of wonderful visitors that tell you "thank you" for sharing.
