A Cowgirl in Paris

I grew up in a small town located in a big state, one made up of other mostly small towns surrounded by wide open spaces. In fact, of all fifty U.S. states, it's the tenth largest in size but the least populated.

It's a place where the outdoors are right outside your door, the sky goes on forever, the winter chill goes straight to your bones, and summer brings rodeos and county fairs. Cowboy hats, boots, and jeans are common. In some parts, wild horses roam alongside deer, antelope, elk, coyotes, and eagles. There are mountain ranges, desert, high plains, and places with names like Cheyenne, Yellowstone, Wind River, and Rock Springs.

I'm not quite sure how I ended up in Paris, but a friend visiting here from the small town where I grew up rightly observed that Paris is so beautiful because it was made by human hands, while Wyoming is so beautiful because it was made by nature's hands.

In some ways, there couldn't be two more opposite places. In many ways, I feel fortunate to have known both.

  2. It's interesting indeed to read your story...don't you ever miss that wonderful nature?? I think that I would. When I lived in London for a long time, I missed my little hometown, where it didn't take me more than a 5 minutes' walk to see the fiord.

You are lucky though, to be able to like both ways of living. I'm sure that Paris is a fabulous place too - my sister went there many times and loves Paris SO much.

    Have a nice day :))

  3. What a great post. And how very lucky you are to live in two such different places. We're practically cousins -- I moved around as a kid, but spent a lot of those years "out west" where your state wasn't far away. ;-)

  6. Thank you -all- very much for sharing your thoughts!

Ulla V., that's a good question -- yes, I do miss it, which is probably partly what prompted me to write this post. Of course, neither place is perfect, and my life has had its share of ups and downs...I guess I'm trying to see the positive side of things (at some times it's easier than others). :)

Thimbleanna, you're right, that does make us practically cousins. Hope you have great memories of the time you spent out west. :)

  9. You grew up in a beautiful place. I have always enjoyed my visits in your country although I never went to Wyoming state. I hope you enjoy France as much as I liked the US.

  10. What a beautiful post! Like you I grew up in a small time in a wide open US state (Utah), but for the last couple of years have been living abroad, at least half of the time, first in Rio de Janiero and now in New Delhi. The places couldn't be more opposite, and yet somehow I feel connected to each.
