In response to your questions -- I used two strands of thread over two threads of the linen and stitched without using a pattern other than the one for the alphabet itself. It's from an out-of-print book, but there are many different types of alphabets out there that could be used.
I love red on linen, I see it all the time in Marie Claire Idées...sigh...one day I will live in France too! Beautiful work.
